Three kinds of places
So what is a place? Before answering it, I want to state there can be three characteristics concerning about a place.
Look so special
A place can be so special and interesting. Cafe, restaurants and tourist sites can have their own unique architectures and meals with utensils. Visitors flock there also because of media reports. They plan to go there on weekends to take photos and share them on Facebook or Instagram. But after visiting, most of them will forget and will not visit again.
In order to arouse people’s concern and attract them to revisit, shop owners and museum curators introduce new elements into the place by updating menus and exhibition topics.
As a part of daily life
A place can be a part of one’s daily life. It can fit people’s current lifestyle, and it itself can become a new part of it. The former can refer to cafe in response to people’s need of a quiet and comfortable area to immerse themselves in their tasks and assignments. More and more cafes available and customers become more productive and creative. Some guesthouses with quiet environment attract people to come alone to relax and refresh themselves.
The latter can be new transport terminals or new bookstores. A new terminal or transfer can change people’s ways of commuting. A new bookstore allows people to get in touch more with books. If a bookstore can have a comfortable reading space, customers can get into habit and love reading. Sure they will visit the bookstore again!
Emotional attachment and human interaction
A place like a small and independent shop can let people love it and have an emotional attachment with it. Nice people can contribute to intimacy with others in a place. Backpacker hostels are typical examples. Some can strive a balance between meeting great people easily and being alone, while some are party hostels which do not leave any privacy. In a coffee shop, shop owners can customers can exchange ideas and thoughts on coffee.
Emotional attachment does not only occur among humans, but also architecture and space arrangement so that people will feel relieved inside, and they will come again.
Some places have only its exteriors without meanings. Some without stunning appearance can be loved by people and play an important role in their daily life. Some possess all the characteristics above. For me, a place should carry meanings in which people can develop emotional attachment and can meet people to exchange ideas and thoughts so easily. A meaningful place can make people come more, and their activities can generate more and more new meanings.
If good places increase in a city, people will like the city. Traveling there can bring unique and unforgettable memories. Living there can bring new life experiences and inspirations.
